EDITORIAL: CRITERIA FOR GIVING TO NON-PROFITS
As a member of a Screening Committee of a large veteran’s organization for several years, and after attending seminars FOR charities in general, I’ve made some important observations. The following are points that you should consider and questions that you should ask when considering your donation to ANY non-profit:
1. Does the organization have, or have they applied for 501(3)(c) status with the IRS - OR come under the umbrella of same?
2. Does the requester of funds represent a cause, program and/or effort which meets the goal, spirit and cause of the person/organization who is making the donation?
3. Is the organization state incorporated and willing to back it up with proof?
4. Is the organization willing to share with the public:
a. Financial Statements (including fund raising totals and expenditures)?
b. A list of its accomplishments in relation to its mission?
5. Some Chambers of Commerce and local charitable groups stress giving to ONLY local charities - for obvious reasons. Many donations are pooled together in a National or even International level (i.e. Red Cross, Veterans Organizations). Some say its “The American Way” to share with others in need. Those who can…will.
6. In some states, the Attorney General may not allow posts to make donations to “Vet’s Visits” from their gaming funds – however, GENERAL FUNDS ARE ALLOWED.
THE QUESTION TO ASK IF GIVING TO “VET’S VISITS”
Q. How does “Vet’s Visits” serve our Veterans (active duty, reserves), families, organizations and community??
A. “Vet’s Visits on TV” provides valuable information and education about many veterans benefits/programs, both State and Federal. We interview Congressmen, along with State and National Officers of many Veterans organizations also.

Do you know of a city with a population of 3,000+, a public access channel, a veteran’s group and a County Veterans Service Officer who would be interested in learning more about bringing “Vet’s Visits” to their community?? If so, please contact Jerry Barnhart at the address / telephone number located in the upper left hand corner of this page.

”PLAY CITIES” FEATURES WELCOME
What “makes it” as a feature on “Vet’s Visits”? We have always incorporated special events sent to us into our program, as they are of interest to others as well, not only to veterans, but to everyone, both local and outside your community. Your event may inspire and impress upon others the importance of COMMUNITY and PATRIOTISM.
To become a “reporter” for “Vet’s Visits”, here’s what you need to do:
1. Ask your cable access director to have someone tape the event OR…
2. Tape the event yourself, using a mini-digital camera. Only mini-digital and DVD-R can be used. Please include a typed credit with your tape. Your tape will be edited into our 28-29 minute format. Tape will be returned if requested.
3. No promises are made as to what month the feature will run.
4. Plan ahead!! Make the decision to tape your event before it occurs. Once taped, you will be ready to share.
Where will it be seen? ”Vet’s Visits on TV” is shown in over 290 Minnesota cities and 17 other states (over 180 cities). Thirteen communities started the series in July in eastern Montana and one was added in Maine.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, please don’t hesitate to contact Jerry Barnhart (address and telephone number listed on the Contacts page of this site).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Please DO ask yourself…..
SHOULD “VET’S VISITS” BE CONTINUED???
- Is the show of ANY value to VETS?
- Is it too patriotic?
- Is it too boring (a waste of time)?
- Is it NOT relevant to anyone I know?
- Is it too mature for kids?
Do our veterans (active duty and reserves) need information about events happening in other cities? (Only a few County Veterans Service Officers have told me “not interested” for this reason.
So, do YOU feel that the show has any value?>If you do, then PLEASE, spread the word to others….at your meetings and in your community. Also, please talk to your County Veterans Service Officer. The more positive responses received, the more viewers will benefit from the show.
If you DO feel that “Vet’s Visits” is of value, please mention it to your posts Executive Board and Gaming Screening Committee. Donations ARE needed to keep the show going. THANK YOU!!
